Etiology and diagnosis of progressive atrophic rhinitis
نویسنده
چکیده
All diseases that result in turbinate atrophy in swine are called atrophic rhinitis (AR);however, not all cases of AR are economicallysignificant.Economic losses are attributed to reduced weight gain and feed efficiencyand the cost of treatment and prevention. There are two recognized forms of AR, which include the progressive form caused by toxigenic Pasteurella multocida and the nonprogressive form caused by a toxigenic Bordetella bronchiseptica. The form caused by B. bronchiseptica is not as severe as that caused by P multocida, and the lesion is thought to be reversible.

chronic nasal disease and a form of chronic rhinitis characterized by mucosal atrophy with resorption of underlying bone, formation of thick crusts, nasal obstruction, anosmia and a distinct fetid odor (1). The etiology is still unknown, but some bacteria such as Klebsiella ozaenae, Proteus, Escherichia coli and Bacillus pertusis have been isolated from the nasal secretions of patients as causa...
متن کاملDifferentiation of toxigenic from nontoxigenic isolates of Pasteurella multocida by PCR.
A PCR assay was developed for the differentiation of toxigenic Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida strains, the major etiologic agent for progressive atrophic rhinitis in pigs, from nontoxigenic strains. The PCR targeted a toxA gene encoding a 143-kDa dermonecrotic toxin that is considered to be the central etiologic factor in progressive atrophic rhinitis. toxA fragments were amplified from...
متن کاملProgressive atrophic rhinitis in a medium-scale pig farm in Kiambu, Kenya.
Forty-two pigs in a herd of 117 displayed various clinical signs of progressive atrophic rhinitis. The main signs included sneezing, coughing, lachrymation, serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge, and nasal bleeding in 1 pig. Three pigs had lateral deviation of the snout, while 4 had brachygnathia superior with obvious deformation of the face. Four acutely affected weaner pigs appeared weak, wh...
متن کاملEtiology and Serological Diagnosis Of Swine Atrophic Rhinitis
It is urgent to ascertain the etiological agent of the swine atrophic rhinitis (AR) for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Therefore, many etiological theories have been offered up to the present day, and after all, it has been elucidated that AR is a transmissible disease of the swine: Since 1963, Switzer and his co-workers' >.2 >>,3> have presented the agency theory of Alealiyenes (...
